Spanto was a real one.
It’s hard to believe that it has been one year since our feeds were flooded by the devastatingly sad news that Spanto, one of the two founding members of world renown brand Born x Raised had tragically passed away in a car accident.
What a bucket of cold water.
The streetwear community mourned another loss of someone gone way too soon. A graffiti writer, a good person, a great designer with purpose, all swept away in a second. A reality check that we’re here one second but can be gone the next. To not take it for granted. To really juice every last second of the time we have on earth.
There are many things we can learn from Spanto, and his legacy and impact are a testament to it; if you do something, give it your all. Do it with purpose. The brand BxR was grounded in strong roots celebrating Native American heritage and the cross-polination with urban US. Born out of LA, every piece was a celebration of life and heritage and the symbiotic relationship between the two. A who we were mixed with who we are.
If we take a step back and look at what BxR did, it was one of a few brands that was still reminiscent of the 80’s and 90’s, in which what you wore defined you (and in some cases would mark the difference of where you could/could not go in LA and some parts of ?merica). Staying true to this, the brand was loud, each piece was a carefully crafted statement.
Last year had a heavy program for BxR, collaborations with Nike, Stussy, and a few more (that have continued this year). It’s a true shame Spanto will not be physically around to see just how much the community is embracing these capsules, eating them up in seconds upon being released, but I’m sure, wherever he is, he is just using this to fuel that fire he was known to have, going after each and every project with his all.
Spanto had a life full of ups and downs and was a true fighter, overcoming cancer, overcoming many adversities, he will truly be missed.
